Our Adult Karate class incorporates techniques and Kata’s of the traditional style of Okinawa Goju Ryu. The name Goju Ryu translates to the hard/soft way, taken from the Bible of Karate called Bubishi. This style emphasizes on breath control and conditioning. It teaches basic training methods such as conditioning for strength and endurance, mental discipline, and close-in fighting techniques. Also training on the Makiwara(punching post), is very important.
A typical 75 minute class begins and ends with a bow to the teacher (Sensei). After a warm-up, students practice the art’s particular skills, which may include kicks, punches, and blocks. Adults often spar one another (or Mix it up) to practice the techniques learned, and demonstrate them towards each other, as you would defend yourself in reality. Each requires concentration and strict attention.
Progress is often marked by the belt system, which takes the beginner from a white belt through a variety of colors until black. Testing for each new level, generally every four months or so, or until the teacher deems them ready. It is a good exercise in setting and achieving goals.
